Some people swear by the Ostermalm’s Korvspecialist as the best hot dog in Stockholm, a sizable group says that it is Günter’s Korvar in Vasatan.
You know its good when the stand has a steady stream of local customers in the queue, we knew we were in for a treat.
I’d be remiss if I said that we went to Günter’s because we wanted hotdogs that day. What we really wanted to try a Swedish specialty – korv med raksalld, hot dogs with shrimp salad. We didn’t get that, but we did get some amazing hot dogs. The store does not have videos from international youtubers (unlike Ostermalms Korvspecialist), but the presence of a queue of locals means this is a local treasure.
The queue was slow moving, but it was worth the wait. The food is still prepared by Günter Schwartz the owner of the stall. Each sausage/wurst/korv grilled to perfection by an expert before being served.
At the end though a well grilled hot dog is just that a well grilled hot dog, so what makes this stand stand out? The sauces and the sauerkraut that is served together with the hot dog.
This spicy, savoury sauces were the key to the hot dog in my opinion. They laced the baguette with beautiful flavours, in fact just the bread with the sauce alone was flavourful and tasty. There didn’t seem to be a favourite hot dog, everything seem really well liked.
We got two different kinds of hot dog and we were converted – missed korv med raksallad instantly forgotten.
And at 55 SEK just for the bun, it’s got to be one of the cheapest street food items available in the city. Must try!
